A lot of songs were composed to commemorate the War. Mikhail Nozhkin’s Last Battle (Russian: “Последний бой”) remains one of the most famous. The song was written and performed during the shooting of the Liberation series (Russian: “Освобождение”) where Nozhkin played the part of an assault company commander. The first episode of the series was aired in 1969, the year when the country heard its would be people’s hymn for the first time.
Later Mikhail recalled that during the shooting he lived in the Yauza Hospital yard, just like at wartime, the latter being one of Moscow’s oldest hospitals. Throughout the war the Yauza Hospital was transformed into a military hospital, healing the wounded.
“I used to stand on a stool, Nozhkov recalls, reciting poetry, singing popular songs, telling anecdotes, or even dancing. Sometimes a hand would reach out and give a lump of sugar or a loaf of bread. I remember that songs were in high demand. My family were singing, my neighbourhood was singing, the whole nation was singing. People used to discuss all sorts of things, carefully avoiding the sore subject of war. Those were good, bright people. So I just remembered those guys at the hospital and wrote this song:
