Chronicle of war:

16 days left till the Great Patriotic War Victory Day

Another Hero City of the Great Patriotic War is Tula. The title was conferred onto it by the order of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union in 1976. In the tough autumn of 1941, the city became Moscow’s major south outpost.

In late October 1941, the Nazi tank divisions were approaching Tula, overcoming heavy soviet resistance. The Tula Workers’ Regiment, an NKVD regiment, manned with the Tula militia stood up for a deadly fight. For three days the enemy attempted many assaults, but the defenders valiantly kept the German hosts at bay. The front attacks evidently futile, the Nazi decided to approach the town from the south-southeast direction. However, this attempt was doomed as well. Not only did the soviet troops withstand the continuous enemy onslaught, but also impeded the progress of a large enemy force towards Moscow.

The Red Army soldiers and the local militia showed exemplary courage, toughness, and heroism. The Tula citizens were also of great help for they had transformed the location into an impregnable fortress. The heroic defense of Tula spoiled the enemy plan to reach Moscow before winter; cemented the West Front’s Left Wing stability at the extreme southern avenues of approach to the capital; and contributed to the Bryansk Front durability.

In December 1941, the West Front’s Left Wing’s troops defeated the German tank shock troops, thus eliminating the southern threat to Moscow.
