One of the first books, dedicated to the Great Patriotic War, was Viktor Nekrasov’s In the Trenches of Stalingrad, telling the story of the city’s heroic defense in 1942-1943. The novel was first published in The Znamya (“The Colours”) magazine in 1946. The novel made its author world famous; it was reedited many times, total circulation amounting to several million copies, it was translated into thirty-six languages. After Comrade Stalin read the book, comrade Nekrasov was awarded the USSR State Prize, 2nd class. In 1956, the Soldiers film was shot on the basis of the plot of the book and of the script, written by the author himself. The film received the All-Union Movie Award; it was starred by Innokenty Smoktunovsky. Many literary critics acknowledged the Trenches of Stalingrad as one of the best war novels, based on the author’s personal experience at the front.
