Mikhail Odintsov is not only a famous soviet writer, but also Twice Hero of the Soviet Union, Honorary Air Force Pilot of the Soviet Union, colonel general of the USSR Air Force. During the war, he downed fourteen enemy aircrafts, an unparalleled record for storm trooper pilots. By September 1943, comrade Odintsov had accomplished ninety-six combat missions, inflicting considerable damage on enemy manpower and combat vehicles. The pilot was distinguished by his courage, high maneuvering skills, and tactical solutions. Thus, during a mission in 1942 comrade Odintsov covered the commander’s aircraft from an enemy fighter attack with his own aircraft and destroyed two Nazi fighters in the air fight that ensued. Mikhail Odintsov was often recommended as a “master leader of large aircraft formations”. By 1945, comrade Odintsov had accomplished two hundred and fifteen combat missions and met the Victory day in the rank of Guards major. Mikhail Odintsov depicted many an episode from his personal combat experience as well as from that of his fellow-servicemen, six Heroes of the Soviet Union among them, in his book entitled The Breakthrough, published in 1987. Ivan Sokhaty, the narrator, is the spitting image of the author. At the anniversary Victory Parade of 1995, Odintsov was privileged to bear the Victory Banner. Comrade Odintsov died in Moscow, on December 12th, 2011. He was buried at the Troyekurovskoye Cemetery.
