Warming up for the upcoming Victory Day, Channel 1 Russia has launched a documentary series about the great Patriotic War heroes. One of the latest episodes tells the story of Mikhail Bulatov, Hero of the Soviet Union. In Kaliningrad there is a street named after Mikhail Bulatov where the young commander of a field engineering squad swept twenty-four German mines sixty-eight years ago. It was April 1945. The Soviet troops were preparing to assault Konigsberg. The town was an impregnable fortress. The Nazi had put up three lines of hedgehog defense; swamps and lakes blocked most avenues of approach. The only access had been prudently mined. Mission – sweep the mines! A reckless pack headed by Mikhail Bulatov volunteered to accomplish the mission. The Nazi spotted the group and opened fire. One man down, two more wounded. At last, Bulatov found himself the only one left alive. The Germans kept on firing, but a thick fog spoiled an accurate aim. That fog was Mikhail’s salvation. He managed to sweep twenty-four mines. Comrade Bulatov was awarded the Hero’s Golden Star for Courage.
