Considerable role in the victory over the fascists was played by the Soviet Navy fighters, Alexander Shabalin being one of the brightest among them. The future rear-admiral, twice Soviet Union Hero was born in Arkhangelsk province in a peasant family. Before participation in Great Patriotic War he became experienced in fighting during Soviet-Finnish war. Starting from 1941 he was the commander of a motor torpedo-boat TKA-12, where he was guarding the main base of Soviet Navy. By the beginning of year 1944 Alexander Shabalin had wrecked a submarine, 4 carriers and 2 patrol ships of the enemy. The titles of Soviet Union Hero were given to him in 1944 for high military skills during double break-through with a group of motor torpedo-boats and successful landing operation respectively. After the war he was appointed deputy chief of Northern Navy headquarters.
Alexander Osipovitch died on 16th January 1982. A bronze bust of the hero was established in the town Onega in Arkhangelsk region. Several streets in Arkhangelsk, Murmansk, Sevastopol and a square in Onega were named after Shabalin. |
