Only two people were the Fourfold Heroes of the Soviet Union. We have already told you about one of them, Marshal Zhukov, and now it is high time to remember the other one – Leonid Brezhnev. Brezhnev’s political biography is known too well, whereas few people know about his deeds during the Great Patriotic War. Since June 1941, Leonid had started to vigorously mobilize the nation, searching for new recruits to the Red Army. He also managed the main industries’ relocation, later becoming Deputy Head of the South Front Political Administration. In October 1942, when the title of the commissar was eliminated, Brezhnev was unexpectedly re-commissioned as colonel, not as general. Nevertheless, in 1943 Brezhnev was appointed major-general and Head of the Political Administration of the 18th Army. In September – October 1943, the 18th Army took part in the Novorossiysk-Taman Strategic Operation in the course of which the town of Novorossiysk was liberated from the Nazi occupation. During the Kerch-Eltigen Operation the 18th Army troops successfully landed to the south of the town of Kerch and stormed an important tactical location to later hold it for forty days. On August 5th, 1944, the army was reassigned to the 4th Ukrainian Front, remaining its organizational unit until the end of the war, participating in a series of successful operations. In 1945, Leonid Brezhnev took part in the Victory Parade in the ranks of the front.
