Andrei Yeryomenko was one of the most outstanding military commanders of the Great Patriotic War. He commanded the troops at the Smolensk Direction during the defense of Moscow and through to the Great Victory. During the first two years of the war, he alternately commanded the Western Front, the Bryansk Front, the North-Western Front, and the Southwestern (Stalingrad) Front.

Many soviet tankmen received highest military awards for courage and heroism during the Great Patriotic War. One of the most famous tankwomen was Maria Oktyabrskaya who had built a T-34 on her own savings and called it the Combat Girlfriend to become the driver of the machine.

In mid-July 1942, the enemy broke into the big bend of the Don. The Soviet troops in fierce defensive battles delayed the enemy's advance, but Stalingrad was still in danger. The city under the direction of the Stalingrad party organization was preparing for the defense. The soldiers and people were building fortifications on the outskirts of the city. Litvyak was one of the bravest and efficient women-destroyers during Great Patriotic War. This girl was not only a fighter pilot, but a commander of the air flight. The title of the Soviet Union Hero was given to her posthumously. At the age of incomplete 22 years Lidiya Vladimirovna had died in the battle over Mius-front.

Considerable role in the victory over the fascists was played by the Soviet Navy fighters, Alexander Shabalin being one of the brightest among them. The future rear-admiral, twice Soviet Union Hero was born in Arkhangelsk province in a peasant family. Before participation in Great Patriotic War he became experienced in fighting during Soviet-Finnish war.

On the 31st December 1942 the Central united film studio has released a comedy "Antosha Rybkin" on screens. The director of the movie was Konstantin Yudin, and the main star was Boris Chirkov. The movie was dedicated to the war deeds of the cook-fighter Antosha Rybkin, the hero of the "War movie collection" № 3

In Murmansk the war began on June 29, 1941. Active military operations in the North began a week later than in other front parts. She is Protecting Her Motherland is a feature film about a soviet woman fighting a guerilla war with the Nazi invaders. The film was directed by Friedrich Ermler in 1943 at the Central United Film Studio in Alma-Ata. The movie was released on May 20th, 1943.

One of the first books, dedicated to the Great Patriotic War, was Viktor Nekrasov’s In the Trenches of Stalingrad, telling the story of the city’s heroic defense in 1942-1943. The novel was first published in The Znamya (“The Colours”) magazine in 1946.
